The historic harbours in Dordrecht: a step back in time

Dordrecht is not only the oldest city in Holland, it also has a rich maritime history that you can discover during a walk along the historic harbours. Lose yourself in the cosy alleyways, enjoy the view of the old ships and savour the atmosphere of the city that was once the bustling heart of shipping. Ahoy, ready for a piece of history?

Walking along the harbours of Dordrecht is like travelling back in time in slow motion. The narrow alleys and picturesque quays give you the feeling that you are stepping back in time. From the Wijnhaven to the Wantij, each harbour has its own charm and story. Look around you and discover historic buildings, from sturdy warehouses to old ships that give you a glimpse of the past.

Take your time and stop at one of the cosy terraces along the water every now and then. It is the perfect place for a cup of coffee or lunch while you look out over the old ships gently swaying in the harbour. Chances are you will see some ducks that call the city their home.

Dordrecht's harbours are like a painting in motion: every corner tells its own story.

The Kromme Zand is a must-see if you like old ships. An impressive fleet of traditional boats is still moored here. The city has a rich history as a trading centre and it is wonderful to see it all come to life during a walk. And don't forget to take a stroll past the Grote Kerk, with its tower that you can see from the harbour.
