Fascinating fortress city

Countless stories are hidden among the narrow streets, medieval squares and historic buildings of Bergen op Zoom, so grab yourself a city guide and set off on foot to uncover the history this fascinating city.

“On a clear day, you can see the ports of Antwerp from the top of the Peperbus tower.”

The Bergen op Zoom City Walk guidebook, available at the VVV Brabantse Wal tourist office, will show you around breathtaking streets, squares and buildings. Highlights include the Old Town Hall, St Gertrude’s Church, the Prisoners Gate and The Markiezenhof Palace. It is interesting to note that the ‘Peperbus’ steeple of St Gertrude’s Church is dressed up during Carnival. The tower is open to visitors and fun to climb. On a clear day you can see as far as the ports of Antwerp.

Nice to know!

Bergen op Zoom is a true fortress city that was fortified with walls, ramparts, strongholds and other defences designed to protect the population from attacks by invading forces.
