If you like combining culture with shopping, the Alkmaar’s the place for you. It’s a lovely place for shops with beautiful canals, nice shopping streets such as the Hekelstraat and interesting museums. The Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar provides a good impression of this historic town.
The best way to describe the Stedelijk Museum is the Alkmaar’s memory. You walk through the history of Holland’s cheese capital following themes such as the Dutch Golden Age, Victory and Portrait of Alkmaar. Be sure to see Salomon van Ruysdeel’s townscape of 1644. At the start of 2017, the museum bought this painting from an American collector for a million dollars, making it the most expensive purchase in the Stedelijk Museum’s history.
Nice to know
The Stedelijk Museum also houses a large collection of works from the Bergen School, a Dutch painting movement that was established in the village of Bergen.
