Sand and sun in the city

You can be in town and still get sand between your toes at the Oerkap. When the sun shines, this urban beach on the Spaarne is popular among the people of Haarlem. A colourful array of chairs creates a laid-back mood.

“As soon as the sun comes out, the people of Haarlem flock to the Oerkap urban beach.”

From 1 April onwards, and the sun some out, the Oerkap is the place the people of Haarlem flock to. Children can play with their buckets and spades in the large ‘sandpit’ and the grown-ups can enjoy a drink. At meal times you can order a pizza. The large thin-crust pizzas with homemade sauces and choice of toppings are a poorly kept secret in the city. Occasionally a train will race past because this beach is next to the railway.

Nice to know!

A bit further up the Spaarne and over the bridge, there’s another nice place to eat: Frisk. It’s housed in the former Droste chocolate factory and the menu is inspired by Nordic cuisine.
