Walking through the centre of Arnhem, you wouldn’t suspect the presence of a hidden monument of over thirty historic cellars underneath the paving stones.
The cellars can be found in the trading quarter between the Rijnstraat and the Rijn. Here, large merchant’s houses, inns and wine houses with spacious storage cellars were built in the 14th century. Most cellars were leased to merchants who stored their trading goods there. After the discovery of the cellars at the end of the last century, over thirty cellars were joined and opened up to the public. For more information, Gilde Stadswandeling Arnhem organises a tour through the cellars on three afternoons.
Nice to know!
The largest cellar is located underneath the St. Petersgasthuis from 1354, one of the oldest houses of Arnhem.
