Navigating Narrow Waters
Up for a day on the water? Board the Krommerijnder in Wijk bij Duurstede for a lovely boat ride over the Kromme Rijn to Cothen. Along the way you’ll pass Rhijnestein Castle and a nature area where storks like to nest.
The tow barge is inextricably linked to the Kromme Rijngebied. For centuries, this was the only means of transport to travel from Wijk bij Duurstede to Utrecht and back. Aboard the Krommerijnder, a tow barge built after an authentic example, you discover how people used to travel across the water underneath narrow bridges and through sluices. Along the way, the captain and second in command will share all sorts of fun facts about the beautiful nature area and the important role the tow barges played.
Nice to know!
The Krommerijnder used to be pushed from the shore with a pole. In the absence of a path, the barge had to pushed from the water.
