Fresh fish on the quay

When you think of IJmuiden, you think of the steel plant with its tall towers and pipes, but it’s also the place to come and watch ships and eat herring with onions at one of the many fish restaurants along the Halkade.

“Trawlers and cutters unloading their fresh daily catch along the Halkade.”

You can easily spend a whole day watching the comings and going at IJmuiden harbour. Did you know that it is one of the largest fish landing harbours in Europe, with trawlers and cutters unloading their fresh daily catch along the Halkade. You can taste fresh fish straight from the sea at the restaurants in the harbour. The harbour is also the departure point for cruise ships heading out to Newcastle. They arrive at the harbour daily at 10am and leave at 5.30pm.

Nice to know!

The Kop van de Haven restaurant looks out to Forteiland, a historic coastal fort built in 1885. It forms part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
