If you fancy a sporty adventure, a good workout and enjoy life outdoors, rent a SUP boards and paddle along the Berkel, a river that winds through the Achterhoek region and joins the IJssel in Zutphen.
Anyone wanting to explore the Gorssel region while giving themselves a workout (yes, your muscles will really feel it) can rent an SUP board at De Berkel swimming pool in Almen. From here you can paddle your stand-up board down the river. Last century the Berkel was canalised but a few years ago its natural character was restored, so now it can meander through the countryside once again. Moor up for a coffee break at Theetuin ’t Besselink.
Nice to know!
Until the end of the 19th century, the Berkel was used by berkelzompen: small, flat-hulled barges. Nowadays you can take a boat trip on an old berkelzomp.
