Het Leesten nature reserve: the best kept secret of the Veluwe

Looking for a place to escape the crowds or just get your feet dirty? Meet Het Leesten nature reserve in Apeldoorn, where you can do all kinds of things: walking, cycling and just completely unwind. Perfect for a day in the fresh air and some new snaps for the ‘gram.

Whether you want to test out your new walking shoes, are looking for a reason to get your bike out of the shed again or just want to be offline for a while in nature, Het Leesten is the place to be. In this green paradise in Apeldoorn, you can immerse yourself in nature and learn about the region's flora and fauna.  

Mud on your shoes? Check! You are a real hiker. 

The easiest way is to start your route at the ‘t Leesten Information Centre. This is a perfect starting point where you can park and walk or cycle to Radio Kootwijk or the sheepfold in Hoog Buurlo and discover the Veluwe. You can also find the most beautiful walking and cycling routes through the Hoenderlose and Ugchelse forests here. This information centre also has a souvenir shop, an exhibition and a brasserie.

Would you like to learn more about the animals that live in the Veluwe? The Forest Animal Path is a route of about 1 kilometre for families with young children. A forest kit is available in the information centre with materials and assignments that can be done along the route.
