There’s no need to travel miles to find a museum because Gorssel has one of its own: MORE, the largest museum in the Netherlands for modern realism. The walls are adorned with masterpieces by leading Dutch realists such as Pyke Koch, Jan Mankes and Carel Willink.
MORE is housed in the former town hall. The building, which dates back to 1914, is connected with the new extension by a glass ‘neck’. The architecture is of course not the main reason why around a hundred thousand visitors a year come to MORE. They are drawn by the permanent collection of works by Dutch realists, created over the past 100 years. There is a museum at Ruurlo Castle where you can marvel at the largest existing collection of work by Carel Willink.
Nice to know!
Until 2012, the permanent collection on display at MORE was owned by the DSB Bank. When the bank went bankrupt, the whole collection of around 1200 paintings was bought by businessman Hans Melchers.
