If you’d like to admire Girl With the Pearl Earring, you must visit the Mauritshuis; the location of this famous work by Vermeer. Additionally, the former city palace of Johan Maurits van Nassau houses many more paintings from the Golden Age.
Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Rubens, Frans Hals, Van Ruisdael: all great painters from the 17th century. The permanent collection of the Mauritshuis consists of works from these famous Dutch and Flemish masters. They never fail to impress in the classic setting of chandeliers, ceiling paintings and silk wall coverings. Be sure to take a look in the Golden Hall, the most beautiful room of the Mauritshuis. The new section of the museum has changing exhibits on display.
nice to know
The pearl in Girl With the Pearl Earring has been extensively researched. There’s one thing all researchers agree on: it wasn’t a real pearl. Conclusion: there was no such thing as pearl farms in the 17th century. It’s more likely that this is a metal earring, made of silver or polished tin.
