The lovely village of Heeg lies in the heart of the Frisian lake district. It offers all the space and calm you could ever hope for. Hoist the sails room, chart a cycle or walking tour or venture out in a canoe – feel free to do as you like!

Stayokay Heeg is situated on a former island on the edge of Heegermeer, the largest lake in Friesland. The hostel has its own ANWB-certified sailing school, ‘It Beaken’, as well as a harbour with authentic Frisian tjotter flatboats. It’s the perfect spot to learn how to sail, rent a boat to sail yourself or sail with a the help of a skipper. And are you looking for some Frisian conviviality? The hostel has a cosy brown café and a restaurant with a splendid view of the meadows and water. In the morning, the hostel’s waterfront terrace is an excellent spot to get ready for the day ahead.

‘t Beaken Sailing School

The CWO-certified sailing school, ‘t Beaken, at Stayokay Heeg is the perfect place to learn to sail, rent a boat yourself or sail with an experienced skipper. The sailing school also provides a wide variety of courses and sailing weeks for young people and adults. Depending on your experience and age, you can learn all the ins and outs of skippering an Optimist, Pico, Valk or even an authentic tjotter (a traditional Frisian sailing boat).

Travelling plan

Public transport: From Sneek station take bus 46 in the direction of Gaastmeer. Get off at the ‘De Skatting’ stop. Before the bridge take a left. Follow this road until you see the bridge at the end. Take a right and cross the bridge (dead end) and walk until the gate in front of the Foekema yacht basin. Take a left, the hostel is at the end of this street. Private transport: From the Sneek ring road continue in the direction of Woudsend. Follow the road until the Hommerts exit, towards Heeg. Drive through Osingahuizen, over the bridge, towards Heeg. At the roundabout continue on straight and then take the first exit left. Continue over the bridge, and follow the fork to the left. This is the Tollewei. Continue over the bridge (onto the dead end street) until you reach the gate in front of the Foekema yacht basin. Take a left, the hostel is at the end of this street.

• Opening hours: From the 27th of April up until the 29th of September and during the autumn holiday and Easter. For groups over 10 persons the hostel is open from the 6th of April until the 28th of October and outside that period on request.
